“Attending the program as a law student was quite an amusing experience. Many of the contents were pre-set in our mind as it was correlated with our academics as well.”
AYON (Association of Youth Organizations Nepal) with the support of USAID (United States Agency for Internal Development) and IFES (International Foundation for Electoral Systems) conducted a residential program at the Hotel Arniko, Dhulikhel. Being selected from applications of more than 300 youths, I was fortunate enough to be included amongst the 40 best. I along with my two friends, Srijana and Sobita, all third year students, were amongst the participants from National Law College.
The 3-day program had 13 modules which taught, informed and trained us to be a proper social mobilizer, a capable leader and knowledgeable about the various aspects of democracy including electoral system, local government, good governance, et cetera. The modules included aspects such as institution of governance, aspects of good governance, rights and duties of citizens, electoral system, its processes and importance. Along these, the program was also about developing ourselves. The training and knowledge on how to become a proper leader, be a proper and effective social mobilizer were taught which seemed to be quite useful to the participants. The roles, duties and composition of the tiers of government of our nation were also very briefly explained to us by the facilitators. As a whole, the content was quite elaborated yet well built.
Attending the program as a law student was quite an amusing experience. Many of the contents were pre-set in our mind as it was correlated with our academics as well. But along with that new knowledge and information was gained. From the attendance in this program, I felt that programs like these are very useful, informative and effective for law students. These sorts of programs are not only helpful for our academics but also for our career development as well. The contents and their explanations were very helpful for me personally as the new things became clearer and set in mind.
The fully-funded stay in Hotel Araniko came to an end with graduation and certificate distribution which established us as social mobilizers and facilitators. We also vowed to share our knowledge with other groups of the society and youths. We promised to reach to the less educated and backward people to enlighten them about the issue which is very essential for the upliftment of the community.
The program provided knowledge along with fun. It was a brilliant and fruitful experience overall. This happened thanks to the organizers and the enthusiastic trainers as well as trainees.
