Making History: Youth participation in Census

 

The program aimed to encourage everyone to participate in the Census by engaging trained youth to promote census and census related activities at the community level by organizing youth volunteers through AYON’s member organizations. The first session was facilitated by Chairperson of AYON, Mr. Pradip Pariyar who especially focused on the objective of the training and role of youth in census. Then resource persons presented their information and slides as well as interacted with the participants .

Dr. Prabin Mishra, Secretary, Health and Population Ministry reflected some data and information from previous census and explained the importance of Population and Housing Census. Similarly, Mr. Rajan Shrestha, UN Woman clarified on Gender equality and Social Inclusion, Friendly National Population Census 2068, its importance and role of youth in making this census a success. Whereas Deputy Director General of CBS, Mr. Bikas Bista provided general information on Population Census 2068 and the methods, tools mobilized for it.. Ms. Aradhana Gurung, Program Officer, UNFPA and Mr. Devraj Bhardwaj, AYON Boardmember facilitated a discussion and group work where participants were divided into two groups. The discussion revolved around “How they could contribute after returning from the training program.”

During the interaction session, few questions were raised by the participants. Some of the questions were why teachers were used as data enumerators, why not the unemployed youths?” Mr. Bista replied ,”Census is not a program addressed to unemployment problem and local teachers can easily be traced when mobilized as data collectors and be found easily if any data is found to be missing.”

Despite the rush and the training being held in the verge of census itself, the participants were very eager and determined on sharing their ideas, working within their community to make the Population Census 2068 a success.
