Strategic Location Meeting Held in Pokhara
19 September, 2009To achieve the aim of formulating National Youth Federation, which will bring youths together and work for the promotion of youths, and provide them a platform to express their opinions constructively, the strategic location meeting was executed at Hotel Shikher, Pokhara, dated 19th September 2009. There were 45 participants from different districts and youth organizations, ranging from rights based groups, sports clubs, political wings, student wings, as well as entrepreneurship and professional field. The objective of this interaction meeting was to create common environment in youth group for creating common platform of Nepali youths at national level in general and to explore the youth voice and issues from western development region in specific, which is the process of forming national youth federation. The interaction program was begun with the registration and introduction among the participants. Raman Bhattrai, General Secretary, AYON facilitated the introduction session, sharing the story of deaf tinny frog who, did not heard the voice of other frog saying ‘aim is so difficult to achieve’ hence reached to the target though all of other frogs given up the race due to the discouragement from other frogs, conveying the message that ‘do not hear any thing that blocks your ‘can do attitude’. Afterwards, Program Coordinator Laxmi Niraula sensitized the program Path way to Peace in brief and of strategic location interaction meeting in specific.
After the general introduction of the program Rishikesh Pandey, Lecturer of Development Studies from Pokhara University presented a paper entitled ‘Youth Movements and Peace Building’. The paper discussed on youth definition, youth issues, youth movements, demographic structure of youth population and its implication in youth movement, their outcomes, transforming violent movement to non violent, challenges and opportunities of youths, and role of youth in peace building. Moreover, the paper shared the proposed structure of youth federation. After the presentation of paper, floor was open for discussion. After the discussion, special comments on the paper was made by Shukra Adhikari, Lecturer of Sociology/Anthropology, PN Campus Pokhara, TU looking the youth issue from sociological perspective. Afterwards, Deependra Shrestha from Annapurna FM also delivered brief speech emphasizing to the importance of the culture of listening rather than talking one way. He said that most of the conflict and violent movement are the outcome of lacking listening culture so youth need to develop the practice of listening behavior which helps to peace building.
After the presentation, comments, and speeches, participants were divided in groups for group work. Different groups explored the local as well as national level issues of youths, youth problems and probable ways of solving such problems. The group leaders presented the group work and other participants provided their comments and suggestions. At the last, the participants selected few members as follow-up team who will organize follow-up meetings, as well as talk programs on the issue of youths.
