|” International Youth Day 2018 “|
|Place||: Nepal Police Health Club, Bhirkutimandap|
|Date||: 11th August 2018|
Since its inception in 2005, AYON has been commemorating IYD adapting the themes identified by the United Nations. AYON has been bringing diverse youth efforts together to mark International Youth Day and raise awareness about the situation and issues that young people face in Nepal.
This year the theme of International Youth Day is ‘Safe Spaces for Youth.’ Youth need safe spaces where they can come together, engage in activities related to their diverse needs and interests, participate in decision-making processes, and freely express themselves. While there are many types of spaces, safe spaces ensure the dignity and safety of youth. Safe spaces such as civic spaces enable youth to engage in governance issues; public spaces afford youth the opportunity to participate in sports and other leisure activities in the community; digital spaces help youth interact virtually across borders with everyone; and well planned physical spaces can help accommodate the needs of diverse youth especially those vulnerable to marginalization or violence.
More than one-third of the Nepal population consists of youth, which is a significant number considering the fact that they are the drivers of social change. Youths have always played an important role in Nepal’s history. We believe that providing youth with safe spaces help them to come together and participate in decision-making.
- To bring youth from all walks of life at one place to celebrate Nepali youth’s contribution in the history and recent changes;
- To draw the attention of the policy makers towards the role of youth in achieving sustainable development; advocacy for safe spaces for youth;
- To bring together youth organizations and individuals to amplify the voices of youth.
